Collagen breakdown can mean deeper creases and enlarged pores. As your skin becomes less elastic, pores expand because the collagen fibers in the walls around no longer provide support to hold their shape. As we mature, naturally occurring enzymes that erode collagen become stronger than the mechanisms in our skin that combat them. Sun exposure is one of the key causes of collagen breakdown, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin.
To combat collagen loss, choose products with ingredients such as retinol which combats destructive enzymes. Genistein, a soy extract, blocks and helps diminish these collagen-destroying enzymes. In addition, antioxidants such as green tea extract, vitamins C and E and lycopene are all important collagen-protecting, free-radical destroying ingredients to include in your daily skincare regimen.
I have many patients who are frustrated to find that as they mature, the area above the mouth becomes heavily lined and their lips start to thin out.
Incorporate a skincare regimen with proven anti-aging ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol and exfoliating acids to help to smooth out these lines and make them less visible. In addition, laser sessions, light peels and even Botox above the mouth, will help to reduce the appearance of these lines and will add fullness to the lips.
I believe that the topical application of vitamins is the most effective means of preventing aging and treating existing skin conditions. In fact, a mathematical analysis shows that a 2% Vitamin C gel applied directly to the face is 200 times more potent than consuming a 600 milligram Vitamin C pill! Applying ingredients to our skin early on can make a significant difference in preventing premature aging.
