Dr. Dennis Gross' Tips:

  • Oily skin still needs hydration: Look for oil-free, lightweight hydrators like hyaluronic acid
  • Mix it up: Treat oily areas with a sulfur mask and dryer areas with an oil-free moisturizer
  • Look for beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acid. They’re oil-soluble—why they’re powerful pore de-cloggers

NYC dermatologist shares skincare advice he gives his patients

People with oilier complexions should look to use lotions versus creams, which you can differentiate because a lotion pours and a cream does not. Lotions are also more lightweight, which is better for oily complexions. Hyaluronic Acid can be a great active ingredient for oily skin because it moisturizes via humectants (which pull water vapor from the atmosphere and into the skin) rather than through the application of oil.
Someone with combination skin should be thought of as having a hybrid of two types of skin—often oily and dry. If your skin is dry in certain areas, like the cheeks, but continues to be oily in other areas, such as your forehead, nose and chin, don’t be afraid to mix up products and apply to different areas of the face.
Leaving a salicylic acid product on the skin all day or overnight can help to dry and reverse the effects of over-production of oil, helping reduce acne.
Sulfur is an ingredient that has the unique ability to draw oil out of the skin, which can then be washed away. This will not only help with oily deposits but also shrinks pores. It’s doing this in a way so it’s not stripping so there’s no rebound of increased oil production.
